YMCA Camp Duncan is located about an hour northwest of Chicago on beautiful Fish Lake. Camp Duncan is approximately 340 acres and operates a Day Camp, Overnight Camp, and Group Services Department. Camp Duncan sits on a lake with boats and a blob, archery, climbing tower, high ropes course/zipline, hiking trails, campfires, teams course, soccer fields, basketball courts, gaga pits, and so much more! About BOLD & GOLD
BOLD & GOLD is an outdoor leadership development program for teens that is dedicated to inspiring courage and confidence in diverse groups of young people through outdoor adventures. Our summer program runs single-gender and all-gender off-site expeditions that engage youth through frontcountry and backcountry trips ranging in length from 6 to 13 days. Our goal is to increase confidence, courage, emotional intelligence, wonder, and community awareness in participants. We do this through activities such as backpacking, hiking, canoeing, and whitewater rafting. BOLD & GOLD prepares young people to be the next generation of leaders through multicultural experiential education in the natural world.
Job Summary:
The Wilderness Instructor will be responsible for co-leading 6 to 13 day outdoor expeditions in wild and scenic locations. This includes driving mini buses with participants, leading activities like canoeing and backpacking, and facilitating leadership and team building curriculum. Because of the nature of these off-property expeditions, a high degree of responsibility and independence is required. Experience camping, canoeing, backpacking, and hiking as well as the ability to swim is also required.
Trips will run concurrently with resident camp sessions, with 1-week sessions beginning Sunday afternoon and running through Friday morning, and the 2-week session beginning Sunday afternoon and running through Friday morning of the following week. Instructors will be on-duty for the duration of trips. Shared housing is provided at Camp Duncan.
Scope of Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Co-lead 6-13 day wilderness-based backpacking, paddling, or whitewater rafting courses with minimal supervision. Up to 10 participants aged 13-17 will be on each trip.
- Build strong rapport with participants and staff, foster positive group development and multicultural leadership, create structure, and draw learning from experiential activities.
- Model cultural humility and celebrate diversity, effectively working with people of different identities, backgrounds, experiences, and abilities.
- Ensure a physically and emotionally safe and inclusive environment for youth and staff.
- Transport participants in 14-passenger mini-buses to and from program areas.
- Cook meals in the backcountry on camping stoves.
- Manage the unique risks of wilderness-based programs.
- Other duties around camp as assigned (could include kitchen, maintenance, or resident camp).
Staff will gain the following skills:
- Complete trainings and certifications in First Aid/CPR, Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention, Leadership Development, and the overall function of the camp.
- Learn valuable outdoor living, cooking, and navigating skills.
- Learn to facilitate at the archery range, climbing tower, teams course, high ropes course, waterfront, and more.
- Grow your communication and leadership skills by working with all departments at camp, including kitchen, maintenance, and resident/day camp.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- One or more years of experience working with teens in an organized setting, including facilitating activities that address issues facing adolescents.
- Excellent judgment and decision-making skills in adverse environments.
- Strong group facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
- Knowledge of developmental needs of teens; demonstrates an understanding of the needs of teens and the ability to evaluate their needs individually.
- Personal or professional experience in backpacking, paddling, hiking, camping, etc
- Be able to hike and/or backpack over a variety of terrain and teach techniques for approaching that type of terrain.
- Have experience and knowledge of basic backcountry equipment or techniques such as stove use, bear hangs, or water purification.
- Have experience and knowledge of reading maps and using them for navigation.
- Effectively manage physical risks for yourself and participants including terrain, weather, and wildlife interactions.
- Ability to carry/lift objects over 50 lbs, travel over varied terrain (rocks, mud, roots, hills, etc.) up to 10 miles a day, and be comfortable spending extended periods of time in a wilderness setting (including sleeping in a tent for every night of each trip).
- Current WFA, CPR, and Lifeguarding certifications (or ability to obtain)
- This position requires driving, must be at least 21 with a clean driving record and ability to pass the Y’s van driver training.

Resident Camp Health Officer
YMCA Camp MacLean has been proudly providing camp programming for children, teens, and adults since 1941. The Resident Camp Health Officer is a seasonal position. Under the direct supervision of the Camp Director, the Health Officer is responsible for proper health care and first aid for campers and staff.
Scope and Responsibilities:
- Collect all campers and staff medication keep them locked up and dispense as directed
- Perform a wellness check all campers & staff for communicable diseases, health problems, illnesses as directed in the written health procedures.
- Collect and file all camper and staff health forms.
- Maintain all first aid kits.
- Maintain standing order medication and report medication or supply needs to the camp director.
- Maintain daily treatment log.
- Be readily available for first aid emergencies and other contingencies.
- Secure proper treatment for campers and staff requiring a Doctor's or hospital attention.
- Give a brief health check to campers leaving the camp property for overnight trips. Make sure accompanying staff members have necessary first aid information, daily and pm medication, first aid orientation and health forms.
- Contact parents of camper requiring physician's attention, overnight stay in health center or whenever is deemed necessary.
- Issue written health information to all staff of campers requiring medication and special allegories so that staff are aware.
- Report any incident to the camp director. All incident reports are filled out by camp director.
- Observe and advise camp director and staff on health, disease, sanitation and cleanliness issues.
Requirements:
- Must have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or equivalent education experience
- Must be licensed by the state as a RN, EMT, or LP
- Must have current CPR and First Aid Certification
- Must have 1-3 years of nursing and/or related experience
- Prior camp experience is preferred

As an Overnight Camp Summer Leadership Team member, you are responsible to:
- Helps plan and implement recreational activities including but not limited to: arts and crafts, fishing, songfests, swimming, nature hikes, archery, boating, adventure activities, and more.
- Works with the Program Director and Summer Leadership Team to create weekly programs to engage campers and provide a variety of experiences for campers of all ages.
- Assist with the overall functions of the camp daily schedule
- Coaches and mentors camp counselors to support them in creating positive experiences for youth and families.
- Enforces rules and regulations of the facilities to maintain discipline and ensure safety. Monitors campers and counselors and intervenes if campers or counselors are behaving inappropriately or unsafely.
- Supervise camp staff working assigned program areas.
- Have current required certification for assigned program area by the camp’s vendor of choice or equivalent or achieve certification upon hire.
- Sets up facilities and/or equipment for activities and store equipment appropriately after use. Immediately notifies Program Director of any broken or unsafe equipment or if more resources/equipment are needed.
- Works to keep facilities safe, clean and inviting by adhering to YMCA and American Camping Association standards. Promotes the value of keeping camp clean, welcoming and safe with staff.
- Serve as a positive role model for staff and campers set example of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
- Follow opening and closing procedures for all program areas. Responsible to ensure program areas are locked and secured while not in use.
- Assist in conducting mid-summer and end summer evaluations for counselors.

Overnight Camp Summer Leadership Team - Aquatics Director
Under the direct supervision of the Program Director, the Waterfront Director coordinates and supervises the day-to-day operation of the waterfront programs in overnight camp. The Waterfront Director maintains high levels of safety standards and enforces strict safety standard rules at aquatic areas. The Waterfront Director must be a certified lifeguard.
Overnight Camp Summer Leadership Team - Unit Director
Under the direct supervisor of the Program Director, the Unit Director will provide support to the day-to-day camp operation. Responsible for assisting ropes programs, aquatic programs, and other program areas in need of support.

Scope and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for assisting the Summer Resident Camp Counselor with ALL campers.
- Ensure safety for ALL campers at ALL times including:
- Physical and emotional health
- Never leaving a camper unsupervised.
- Putting campers first
- Being aware and able to determine if something is unsafe, e.i...pillow fights, sliding down banister, towel whipping, etc..
- Assist the Summer Resident Camp Counselor to supervise campers at all times, so that a camper is never unsupervised. Jr. Counselor’s cannot supervise campers on their own without a lead counselor (18+ years old)
- Providing certain campers with problems extra individual attention, but not to neglect the campers without problems.
- Teach skill periods depending on their interest and abilities.
- Provide public relations/customer service to parents/guardians to ensure a positive impression of our camps.
- Provide and prepare stories, skits, stunts, games, devotions, etc prior to the start of camp for cabin time, rainy days, or extended periods of time.
- Be available and flexible to provide support and fill in at any area of the camp at all times
- Prohibiting intimate displays of affection toward any camper. This including and not limited to: hand holding, writing letters or emails to campers, asking for phone numbers of campers, text messaging campers or sharing phone number with campers. It is prohibited to participate in any camper/counselor romances.
- Serve as a lifeguard or look out at the waterfront and at the pool.
- Lead cabin devotions or huddle ups each night before bed.
- Assist Summer Resident Camp Counselor with tracking camper's hygiene. Campers are to take a soapy shower every day. Campers are never to go home on check-out day dirty or unclean.
- Share and lead songs with other counselors during campfires and before meals. Each counselor has at least two songs ready to share at campfires.
- Assist Summer Resident Camp Counselor with checking campers bedding to ensure cleanliness. If bedding is soiled, bag up bedding and make bed with fresh bedding from the health officer.
- Supervise the store line and store area, making sure there are only two campers in the store at one time.
- Be mindful of keeping the camp clean by picking up litter
- Responsible for the safety and upkeep of all program equipment. If you use it - put it back, if it is broken - report it to the camp director, if you run out - report it to the camp director, if it is unsafe - don't use it and report it to the camp director.
- Responsible for camper discipline and taking campers whose behavior is beyond the counselor to the assistant program director.
- Responsible to make sure your campers needing night time medication report to the health center after the evening snack time.
- Responsible to maintain a positive attitude and refrain from behavior that is detrimental to the staff team and staff morale.
- Maintain a clean and orderly cabin, setting examples for campers
- Responsible for reporting any of your own health concerns- ill/exhausted to your supervisor.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16 yrs old.
- Strong interest, maturity and judgment in working with children in an outdoor setting.
- Knowledge and experience in camp related activities preferred.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications (within the past year)

The Family Camp Store Manager organizes and maintains the camp store to provide campers with accurate information, the ability to purchase grocery items, apparel, fishing licenses and live bait, and hot food. The camp store is a contributing factor to Camp Nawakwa’s revenue so must be run efficiently.
Family Camp Aquatics Director
Under the direct supervision of the Program Director, the FamilyCamp Aquatics Director is responsible for coordinating and supervising the day to day operation of the waterfront, water activities, and rental boat program for the families that stay at Camp Nawakwa. Overnight Camp, Health Officer
YMCA Camp Duncan, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. At camp, we teach self-reliance, a love for nature, and the development of attitudes and practices that build character—all amidst the fun of camp fires, canoeing, archery, swimming, and meaningful relationships.
The Overnight Camp Health Officer is a seasonal position. Under the direct supervision of the Camp Director, the Health Officer is responsible for proper health care and first aid for campers and staff.
Scope and Responsibilities:
- Collect all campers and staff medication keep them locked up and dispense as directed
- Perform a wellness check all campers & staff for communicable diseases, health problems, illnesses as directed in the written health procedures.
- Collect and file all camper and staff health forms.
- Maintain all first aid kits.
- Maintain standing order medication and report medication or supply needs to the camp director.
- Maintain daily treatment log.
- Be readily available for first aid emergencies and other contingencies.
- Secure proper treatment for campers and staff requiring a Doctor's or hospital attention.
- Give a brief health check to campers leaving the camp property for overnight trips. Make sure accompanying staff members have necessary first aid information, daily and pm medication, first aid orientation and health forms.
- Contact parents of camper requiring physician's attention, overnight stay in health center or whenever is deemed necessary.
- Issue written health information to all staff of campers requiring medication and special allergies so that staff are aware.
- Report any incident to the camp director. All incident reports are filled out by camp director.
- Observe and advise camp director and staff on health, disease, sanitation and cleanliness issues.
Requirements:
- Must have a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or equivalent education experience
- Must be licensed by the state as a RN, EMT, or LP
- Must have current CPR and First Aid Certification
