Community Assessment Research Assistant- Internship Opportunity

The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s Research & Evaluation (R&E) team seeks a dedicated Research Assistant to support our community assessment work. The R&E team is responsible for driving cross-functional evaluation and impact measurement
throughout the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, in addition to knowledge transfer and dissemination via research efforts. This team spearheads association-wide evaluation and assessment to optimize the quality of programs and services provided at Y locations across Chicagoland, and at sites in Wisconsin and Michigan.
The R&E team leads and supports a variety of research initiatives aimed at the Y’s essential services, which include, but are not limited to housing, food security, early learning, violence prevention, health equity, and economic empowerment. Another one of the R&E team's responsibilities is to understand the strengths, needs, and wants of the communities we serve and hope to serve. The Department’s leading goal is to raise the Y as a vital community asset providing high-quality, innovative programs and services while advancing equity and holistically healthy communities. Community assessment is a pivotal component of achieving this goal, and a primary focus for this position.

The Community Assessment Research Assistant will support a community assessment in one of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s service areas.
Tasks may include (but are not limited to):
- Managing relationships with YMCA staff and local community partners to
support the overall community assessment project.
- Developing tools for and managing qualitative and quantitative data
collection to understand the needs and assets of the community.
- Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data using a strengths-based
approach.
- Obtaining and analyzing secondary data at the community level.
- Writing a report based on the findings of the community assessment.
- Disseminating the findings of the community assessment to a variety of
audiences/stakeholders.
- Supporting other research and evaluation efforts across the association
(optional, if interested).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences, humanities, economics, or related field
and/or equivalent experience.
- One or more years of experience collecting, managing, and analyzing
qualitative and quantitative data. Non-professional experiences such as that
gained in education or other lived experience opportunities count.
- Experience in working with Excel and/or Google Sheets.
- Familiarity with online survey systems preferred (such as Alchemer).
- Experience with data visualization, data organization, and processing.
- Comfortable learning new data systems and analysis methods/software.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects, including developing project
requirements, developing and tracking key milestones, stakeholder
management, and related project management skills.
- Ability to travel within the Chicagoland area to visit the community of interest
and attend activities requiring assessment support (car is not required, just
the ability to get to site locations).
- Commitment to and passion for the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s mission.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills; ability to research,
- identify, and analyze relevant trends and qualitative/quantitative data.
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative, effective relationships with

The community assessment will take place in one of the YMCA service areas. As part of the R&E team, this role will work closely with multiple stakeholders including external stakeholders, Y leadership, program directors, and other staff. There may
be opportunities to support other aspects of the R&E team’s work through this position. This role will require someone who is detail-focused, is a strategic thinker,and has experience in community assessment processes.
This position is an unpaid opportunity with a flexible start and end date dependent upon the availability of the applicant. The number of hours per week for the project is also flexible, likely between the range of 10-20 hours. This position will be hybrid, with the opportunity to attend in-person meetings at the YMCA office and with some required visits to the select community. What you will do:
- Provide a high-level of customer service to members, program participants and guests at all times.
- Supervise and guard the pool and aquatic facility and ensure participants adhere to all YMCA aquatic guidelines and procedures.
- Examine injured persons and administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using training and medical supplies and equipment.
- Perform appropriate water rescues, when necessary, using rescue techniques and equipment.
- Contact emergency medical personal in case of serious injury.
- Actively participate in obtaining further water safety certifications.
- Attend all in-service trainings and staff meetings as scheduled by supervisor or center leadership team.

- Must be at least 16 years of age.

Business Operations Specialist Opportunity
The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is hiring a full-time Business Operations Specialist. This position will have a base located at YMCA Camp Duncan, with the possibility of minimal travel to Wisconsin, Michigan, and YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s association office in Chicago. YMCA Camp Duncan is located just 50 miles north of Chicago in Ingleside, IL. This position will support the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago’s Overnight and Family Camps located in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
The Business Operation Specialist is responsible to provide business, financial, and accounting support within a specified multi-location region in order to effectively and efficiently conduct the business of the YMCA. The position will interact on a regular basis with regional employees. Will be responsible for communicating with camp staff, and may work through changes in procedures as related to program operations.
Essential Functions:
- Supports cash operations and processes daily contributions and transactions received at location including: daily batches, bank deposits and cash management
- Processes accounts payable invoices, as well as purchasing activity in a timely and accurate manner
- Customer service including answering phones, solving customer issues, work with customers on registration issues, set up registration events, knowledgeable in all the camp programs to help in registration
- Assist in the processing of financial assistance requests
- Support financial details for grants as needed
- Follow up on payments and billing
- Ensures proper coding for all expenditures
- Resolves billing issues with vendors including sales tax refund requests
- Assists with month-end accruals and distributes month-end reports for end users

- Program clean-up, material organizing and inventory, program evaluation and transportation
- Plans and facilitates programs in accordance with the goals and policies of the YMCA and in alignment with curriculum
- Modifies activities as needed to ensure cultural relevance, developmental appropriateness, and program schedule
- Generates daily and weekly reports on program progress for supervisor and YMCA leadership

Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalency; completion of higher education coursework or degrees strongly preferred
- Must have prior experience working with youth
- Experience in yoga instruction
- Must have access to personal vehicle for travel between YMCA centers and to transport program supplies
- Able to carry 50+ lbs

YMCA Family Camp Pinewood is hiring an Operations Director!
YMCA Family Camp Pinewood is a leading family-focused facility located in Twin Lake, Michigan, an hour north of Grand Rapids, and is situated on 200 acres of pristine forest and fields. The camp property includes 2/3 of the Echo Lake shoreline. The lake is creek fed and there is no public access or gas motors. The camp’s programs include several weeks and weekends of summer family camper, year round rental groups, and several weddings each year. Our intended timeline is below, however, we have the ability to adjust this timeline as needed:

Under the supervision of the Camp Executive Director, the Operations Director will coordinate and direct all aspects of programs and use of YMCA Family Camp Pinewood including supervising at least one Program Director and one Facility Director to ensure a smooth logistical operation. This position will require a very high level of communication and critical decision making skills. There will be a degree of autonomy but Family Camp Pinewood’s executive and business operations will take place at our Illinois based camp business office. The ideal candidate will ensure the physical and emotional safety and welfare of all guests as well as support the YMCA mission and core values.
This position resides on site at YMCA Family Camp Pinewood in a recently renovated 3 bedroom home.
What you’ll do:
- Ensure camp is following up to date procedures, policies and providing positive public relations at all times.
- Responsible for the development, implementation, management, growth and evaluation of all assigned camp programs.
- Serve as host to facilitate a quality experience for all guests, including rental groups (May include holidays, weekends, & nights).
- Responsible for oversight of adventure/challenge/high ropes activities within programs.
- Responsible for assisting departments in recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising staff that are needed to facilitate camp programs within assigned departments.
- Work closely with the seasonal food service staff and Facilities Director to coordinate food service and facility needs of guests.
- Act as a team member, working closely with other staff including the Executive Director and Camp Business Director on all interrelated matters.
- Responsible for a budget, achieving revenue goals, and controling expenses.
- Responsible for the marketing of all assigned programs. This includes preparation and dissemination of camp literature as well as communicating in person, on the phone and via social media to potential families, campers and/or groups.
- Responsible for maintaining accurate files and records.
- Responsible for maintaining the proper use and upkeep of all camp equipment.
- Work with the Executive Director to learn all facets of camp programming and operations beyond assigned programs.
- Create strong relationships with YMCA of Metro Chicago peers, local entities, and be an active participant in the Michigan Y Camp Network.
- Other duties as assigned.
How you’ll do it:
- Must have Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must have 3-5 years’ experience in camping and demonstrated success in organizing recreational activities in a camp setting, YMCA camping is a plus.
- Current lifeguard and Safe Serve or acquire required certifications in the first 6 months of job, preferred.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule: nights and weekends included.
- Proven ability to establish constructive relationships and interact as a positive role model.
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a commitment to, and a passion for, the mission of the YMCA.
- Demonstrates evidence of YMCA Team Leader competencies in previous experience or practice.
- Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising all assigned camp staff.
- Experience leading, motivating and supporting a diverse, high-performing team including identifying, selecting, onboarding, developing and evaluating team members.
- Strategic thinking skills including effective planning, goal-setting, monitoring progress, tracking results and making appropriate adjustments to plans based on circumstances and context.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple, competing priorities to maximize personal and team effectiveness.
- Budget and expense management experience, with the ability to assist in managing budgets to plan.
- Customer service orientation, with the ability to effectively communicate on a regular basis with internal/external customers, build relationships, manage customer expectations and take responsibility for a high level of service.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively build and maintain relationships with customers, team members and other stakeholders and constituents.
- Proficiency in Google Applications (gmail, docs, sheets, etc) and Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel), email; ability to learn and adapt to new technology.
