    Job Summary:

    The Department of Learning and Evaluation is responsible for driving cross-functional learning, evaluation and innovation throughout the YMCA of Metro Chicago. The Department’s leading goal is to cement the Y as the region’s leading nonprofit provider of effective programs and services. The Learning and Evaluation team members work closely with other departments to develop a portfolio of high quality, evidence-based and measurable programs that are uniform and consistent across membership, camps and human services. The team is also responsible for identifying training expertise and modules at all levels within the Y in order to create a shared culture, understanding and common language for effective program services.

    The Director of Measurement and Evaluation will lead the YMCA of Metro Chicago’s evaluation strategy to showcase participant-level outcomes and impact aligned to the mission of the organization.  The position will also be responsible for supervising a team of data analysts and managers to harness creative and critical analytical skills to solve data problems across the Y. The role will also balance an ability to see the organization’s work from 30,000 feet with a passion for the field to craft data narratives that inform, inspire and mobilize internal and external stakeholders. This person will create an environment conducive to innovative research and evaluation methodology, continuous quality improvement, and implementation of systems to nurture quality excellence.

    Scope of Responsibilities:


    Develop evaluation strategy aligned to programmatic and intervention-based logic models that focus on achieving participant-level outcomes.

    • Determine quantitative and qualitative data metrics to tell the Y’s impact story
    • Author the association’s impact book to communicate participant-level outcomes to partners, funders, and participants
    • Disseminate evaluation best practices across internal and external communication platforms


    In partnership with the Vice President of Learning and Evaluation and other organizational leaders, determine the YMCA of Metro Chicago’s research priorities.

    • Work independently and collaboratively to design, develop, and implement scientific research and development of work for addressing fundamental questions in the field of youth development
    • Collaborate with universities, research entities, and public/private ventures to advance the Y’s research agenda
    • Support and co-facilitate the Y’s research and evaluation committee(s) to engage the broader evaluation community (potentially across city, state, and national audiences)


    Create and lead the impact analytics agenda for the association.

    • Determine process and practices to collect and analyze program data (including measurement of outcomes required by grants, enrollment, attendance and parental consent)
    • Lead the design and use of databases and software applications for data analysis and visualization
    • Conduct analysis and summarize reports or presentations for review by executives, managers, funders, and other stakeholders
    • Provide recommendations to drive operational efficiencies across the Y’s lines of business


    Support Learning and Evaluation general duties.


    • Contribute to the Learning and Evaluation budget process
    • Work in collaboration with Mission Advancement to provide evaluation lens for donor/funder stewardship  


    • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, economics, statistics, math or other related field or equivalent experience, Master’s strongly preferred.
    • 7 or more years of experience working with data (collecting, cleaning, analysis, reporting, etc)
    • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
    • Strong analytic skills
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required, knowledge of other database and data analysis software highly preferred (Access, SAP Business Objects SQL, ArcGIS, etc)
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint required, knowledge of Adobe Acrobat a plus

    Strong organizational skills with the ability to be detail oriented to ensure execution and accuracy
