Job Summary:

The Communications & PR intern will be a member of the Marketing & Communications Department. We are seeking a motivated individual who is full of creative ideas and eager to help generate greater awareness of the Y’s mission. This intern will gain valuable experience at one of leading and largest nonprofits in greater Chicago. This is an unpaid internship.

 

Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Expand regional awareness of the Y’s people, programs and services by writing content for press materials, talking points, websites, e-newsletters, e-blasts and social media, and posting content on hyperlocal websites

  • Attend and contribute to department editorial meetings

  • Review the YMCA and National Observances calendars and contribute story ideas

  • Assist with researching new media opportunities and updating media lists

  • Assist with pulling metrics and reports to determine ROI of communications and PR efforts

  • Assist with proofreading, fact checking, creating/updating databases and organizing resources into a reference library

  • Assist with meeting materials and press kits

  • Assist with updating the Y story database

Support the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by:

  • Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor or the person responsible for those items at your site.

  • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to managing visitors and guests at our facilities.

  • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.

  • Completing all child abuse prevention training as required.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university, pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related fields strongly preferred.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Solid understanding of different social networks

  • Capability to effectively multi-task and meet deadlines

  • Strict attention to detail

  • Creative thinker

  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with internal and external contacts

  • Proficiency in word processing, database work, e-mail and Internet research

  • Knowledge of Google Suite products; PR platforms (e.g., Meltwater), social media management systems (e.g., Sprout) or Adobe Creative Suite are a plus

  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the YMCA of Metro Chicago and the communities we serve
