The mission of the YMCA of Metro Chicago is to develop strong children, families and communities across Metropolitan Chicago through academic readiness, character development, violence prevention, fitness and healthy living. The Teacher Aide provides support to the teaching team in planning and implementing learning experiences for children; maintaining the classroom; and managing children in accordance with the YMCA goals and curriculum plan. The Teacher Aide is responsible for supporting the teaching team in providing developmentally appropriate learning experiences, supervision of children assigned in the classroom, and providing a supportive and positive classroom climate, while ensuring the individual needs of the children are met as mandated by DCFS, ExceleRate Illinois, NAEYC, federal, state and local standards, as applicable.
Scope of Responsibilities:
- Assists the classroom team with the full implementation of DCFS, ExceleRate Illinois™ and NAEYC, policies and procedures, regulations and guidelines in the day-to-day operation of children 3 -5 year olds, including developmentally appropriate practices.
- Exhibits a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with children.
- Utilizes and models appropriate grammar, language, positive interactions and discipline for children and families.
- In conjunction with the classroom team, provides opportunities for children to develop positive self-images and experience success.
- Maintains awareness of children and their health and physical safety at all times and communicates to the teacher(s) any unusual situations or needs of children.
- Assists with routines such as toileting/training, tooth brushing, hand washing, and meals promptly and consistently;
- Attends and participates in weekly classroom team meetings and assists in planning activities.
- Engages in continuing education and complete at least 20 clock hours of professional development annually, through participation in offered trainings, workshops, in-service days, all staff conferences and maintain log of professional development requirements that aligns with their individual professional development plan.
- Serves as a role model for children, families and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming and an effective work ethic.
- Participates in recruitment efforts to help maintain full program enrollment.
- Supports the YMCA’s mission and center operations as needed
Lesson Planning and Classroom Management:
- Participates in planning and implementation of developmentally age appropriate indoor/outdoor activities that will enhance the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each child.
- Positively and actively interacts with and guides children while at play at their level.
- Assists with preparation and set-up of the materials required to implement the daily lesson plan, indoor/outdoor.
- Supports children and teachers with cleanup from activities and transitions among activities.
- Helps with classroom management, arrangement, organization, and labeling materials.
- Actively participates in the upkeep and maintenance of a healthy, safe, and clean environment; regularly sanitizes classroom surfaces, equipment, toys and laundry.
Assessments, Evaluations, and Reports:
Observes, assesses and documents each child’s health, skills, behavior, growth and development, as assigned.
Child Abuse Prevention:
Supports the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by:
- Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
- Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
- Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
- Completing all child abuse prevention training as required
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and a minimum of 6 college credit hours in Early Childhood Education required
- ECE Child Development Associate (CDA) or comparable credential (Minimum: Gateways Level 2 ECE credential) preferred
- Must have prior experience working with children
- Basic knowledge of child growth and development as well as developmentally appropriate practices for children ages 3-5.
- Ability to analyze and interpret State and Local Standards as well as State and local licensing requirements.
- Ability to build rapport with children, families and colleagues.
