    Job Summary: 

    The Teacher Aide works collectively and cooperatively with the classroom team to perform the daily learning activities necessary for a functional classroom environment that enhances learning and achievement, while meeting the individual needs of children as mandated by Head Start, state and local standards; and assist in ensuring the overall safety for all children involved.

    Scope of Responsibilities:

    • Assist the classroom team with the full implementation of Head Start, NAEYC, policies and procedures, regulations and guidelines in the day-to-day operation of children 3 -5 years,  including developmentally appropriate practices.
    • Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with children.
    • Maintain awareness of children’s and their health and physical safety at all times and communicates to the teacher any unusual situations or needs of children.   
    • Assist with routines such as toileting/training, tooth brushing, hand washing, and meals promptly and consistently;  
    • Participate in planning and implementation of developmentally age appropriate indoor/outdoor activities.
    • Positively interacts with and guides children while at play.
    • Assist with preparation and set-up of the materials required to implement the daily lesson plan, indoor/outdoor.
    • Support children and teachers with cleanup from activities and transitions among activities.
    • Assist with documenting and gathering observations, photos and children’s work samples for child assessments, as assigned.
    • Help with classroom management, arrangement, organization, and labeling materials.
    • Actively participate in the upkeep and maintenance of a healthy, safe, and clean environment; regularly sanitize classroom surfaces, equipment, toys and laundry.
    • Assist classroom team in meeting timelines for completing necessary paperwork, including entering data.
    • Engage in continuing education and complete at least thirty clock hours of professional development annually, through participation in offered trainings, workshops, in-service days, all staff conferences and maintain log of professional development requirements.
    • Serve as a role model for children demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate language, proper grammar and interactions.  
    • Demonstrate appropriate attire, grooming and an effective work ethic.
    • Assist with preparations for classroom/center activities and events.
    • Perform other duties as required or assigned

    Child Absue Prevention:

    Supports the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by:

    • Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
    • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
    • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
    • Completing all child abuse prevention training as required

    • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) with up more than 12 college credit hours in Child Development or the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential specific to age group (3-5 year olds)

    • Experience working with a collaborative, constructive peer group
    • Proficient verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely present ideas and concepts and tailor communication to multiple audiences including team, families, and other constituents.
    • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and email; ability to learn and adapt to new technology
    • Demonstrates evidence of YMCA Y Team competencies in previous experience or practice
