Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Site Director, the Youth Development Instructor is responsible for implementing and adapting a wide variety of enrichment activities for grades K-8 in an after-school program setting, while operating in accordance with the State of Illinois licensing regulations andthe YMCA philosophy and goals.

 

Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction to youth, while establishing a nurturing, supportive, and positive classroom climate that encourages youth responsibility, using positive motivation, clear classroom routines, challenging instructional strategies, and effective classroom management techniques.
  • Plan both long and short range activities in accordance with curriculum objectives, developmentally appropriate practice and program philosophy.
  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, personnel, and other agencies associated with the program.
  • Communicate regularly with instructors, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the youth in the program.
  • Responsible for safely transporting to and from school and other programming activities.
  • Ensure high quality program implementation by providing a safe, supportive, interactive, and engaging environment and assure the safety and well-being of all youth.
  • Greet youth by name and communicate with all youth participants in a respectful and positive manner.
  • Supervise youth and implement activities, and prepare area for activities, equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and prepare activity plans other records, follow program schedule.
  • Attend all staff meetings, complete trainings and actively participate in all recruitments activities
  • Support the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by:

    Support the YMCA’s mission and center operations as needed
    • Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
    • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
    • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
    • Completing all child abuse prevention training as required.

Requirements:

  • AA degree or higher in Elementary Education, Youth Development, Human Development, Recreation with a minimum 12 college credits in education
  • Candidates must be at least 21 years old and must pass a fingerprinted-based criminal history records check in addition to other requirements. Must maintain current and valid State Drivers License and comply with the bus driver requirements for DCFS and YMCA management skills required.
  • Prior experience wording with youth and ability to motivate and inspire
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of early childhood education, youth growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Demonstrated ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.
  • Must be able to work a full day schedule on days when CPS, Parochial and Charter schools are closed for semester breaks and holidays
